USGLC Mourns the Passing of Former Senator John Warner

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) President and CEO Liz Schrayer released the following statement on the passing of Senator John Warner of Virginia:

The USGLC joins Virginia and the nation in mourning the loss of Senator John Warner, a longtime friend and champion of America’s leadership in the world. In addition to serving as a member of USGLC’s National Advisory Council, Senator Warner, along with Senator Chuck Robb, played a critical role launching our Virginia State Advisory Council as co-chairs, providing wise counsel and reinforcing that what happens globally matters locally.

Throughout his distinguished career of public service – first rising through the ranks to become Secretary of the Navy and then rising through the ranks of the Senate to lead the Armed Services Committee – Senator Warner advocated for the critical connection between global stability and our nation’s safety and economic interests. Speaking on the issue of climate change in his retirement, he laid out the national security stakes, saying if the U.S. failed to lead, “China and India and the rest of the nations of the world are going to eat our lunch.”

His unwavering commitment to America’s role in the world – and willingness to speak his mind to ensure the country got it right – is a beacon of inspiration as we confront increasingly complex global challenges with high stakes for families and communities across the country and we salute his lifetime of service and leadership.

The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (www.usglc.org) is a broad-based influential network of 500 businesses and NGOs; national security and foreign policy experts; and business, faith-based, academic, military, and community leaders in all 50 states who support strategic investments to elevate development and diplomacy alongside defense in order to build a better, safer world.
