While Indiana’s transportation and industrial manufacturing have long been profitable exports, its chemical exports are increasingly a driver of growth for the state – leading to over $20 billion worth of goods exports in 2023. Overall, Indiana’s international trade supports 749,000 jobs in the state.

• In 2022, 8,486 companies exported goods from Indiana of which 85% were small- and medium-sized enterprises. In 2021, 209,100 people were employed by affiliates of companies at least 50% foreign-owned.^3,4

• Indiana exported $56.1 billion in goods to foreign markets in 2023,a 24% increase compared to 2022 Indiana’s largest markets were:⁵

  • Mexico ($7.5 billion)

  • Italy ($3.2 billion)
• Agricultural exports are important to Indiana's economy, totaling $7.4 billion in 2022, according to the USDA.⁶
• Since 2014, the U.S. Export-Import Bank has financed $2 billion in exports from 93 companies in Indiana.⁷
• Since 1992, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency has helped facilitate $111 million in exports from Indiana companies.⁹

• From 2022-2023, 26,739 international students were enrolled in Indiana colleges and universities and contributed $890 million to the Indiana economy.¹⁰

• Since 1961, 3,536 Peace Corps volunteers from Indiana have served in dozens of countries overseas.¹¹
