The USGLC’s presence in states across the country continues to grow as more and more Americans understand the important role the International Affairs Budget plays in their state’s economies and in our national security. We are working aggressively with activists in our key states to identify leadership and begin building on the strong networks already established during last year’s exciting Impact ’08 campaign.

Riley and Wilkins to be USGLC South Carolina Co-Chairs

In South Carolina, former Governor Richard Riley and former U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins have agreed to serve as Honorary State Co-Chairs of the USGLC’s South Carolina Advisory Committee. As Honorary Co-Chairs, they will be instrumental in engaging businesses, and faith-based and community leaders to work together to strengthen support in South Carolina for our nation’s civilian-led tools of development and diplomacy.

Riley was governor of South Carolina from 1979 to 1987, after serving fourteen years in state’s legislature. Riley won national recognition for his remarkable improvements to South Carolina’s education system. In 1993, President Clinton appointed Riley as the U.S. Secretary of Education, where he served until early 2001.

Wilkins has a strong international affairs background as well as extensive legislative experience. Ambassador Wilkins served for nearly 25 years in South Carolina’s state legislature, becoming the Speaker of the House in 1994. He held that position until 2005, when he was appointed by President Bush as the United States Ambassador to Canada.

Florida Activists Ready to Engage

As our leadership is taking shape in South Carolina, activists from across Florida participated in a conference call last week to discuss the state of the International Affairs Budget and what it means for Florida. Participants discussed the upcoming USGLC Florida event featuring General David Petraeus, the Commander of the U.S. Central Command, on February 3, 2010, in partnership with the Tampa Bay Council on World Affairs and Commerce.
