USGLC Applauds President’s Leadership on Food Security at G8 Summit
Remarks Highlight Centrality of Global Development to American Interests

Washington, DC —USGLC Executive Director Liz Schrayer released this statement following the President’s Remarks at the Symposium on Global Agriculture and Food Security:

“Today’s remarks by the President on his renewed commitment to agriculture development are exemplary of strong leadership in addressing global poverty. This new model, which partners public and private sectors with civil society and country ownership, is a smart approach to ensuring an efficient, results-driven initiative to achieve the goal of lifting 50 million people out of poverty in sub-Saharan Africa in the next ten years.

“Just as President Bush responded to the global health crisis with his PEPFAR and malaria initiatives, President Obama is doing the right thing at the right time in the right way with this new approach to addressing food insecurity.  This will make a direct impact on the world’s poorest people in developing nations, while stabilizing many of the most strategic regions in the world.  That’s not only critical to alleviating world hunger, but it’s also good for our security, prosperity, and values as a country.”
